Birthday Hydrangeas

Birthday hydrangeas give a bouquet full, rounded volume that fills a dining table or a sideboard. Choose hydrangea with blue delphinium, purple hydrangea with hot pink roses, or mopheads with soft pink roses and berries, each arranged by hand by a florist near the recipient.

The guide below helps you choose by color and keep the big blooms from wilting.

Choosing birthday hydrangeas

Pick a color story

Clear Skies Bouquet is the only design here without roses, pairing hydrangea with belladonna delphinium in blue and white. Vibrant Violets sets purple hydrangea and hot pink roses in a glass cube vase, and Purple Rain fills a large spittoon vase with roses, hydrangea and eucalyptus in one generous size. Berry Rosey keeps to soft pink roses, mophead hydrangea and hypericum berries, while Golden Eye leans yellow and green with silver brunia in a white ceramic vase. For a romantic hydrangea birthday bouquet, Alice adds red and white roses and lilies in a twisted ginger vase.

Keeping hydrangeas fresh

Hydrangeas drink a lot, and their big heads can lose water quickly in a warm room. Keep the vase full and recut the stems every few days. If a head starts to wilt, many florists suggest submerging it in cool water for half an hour or so, then recutting the stem. Keep the arrangement out of direct sun and away from heat vents.

Birthday hydrangea questions

Are hydrangeas good birthday flowers?

Yes. Their big, rounded heads make a bouquet look generous, and they're often linked with gratitude and heartfelt emotion, a kind message for a birthday. They suit a home, an office or a family gathering. See all our hydrangeas for more.

Why might the hydrangea color differ from the photo?

Hydrangea shades vary naturally from week to week and season to season, so the florist works with the freshest stems on hand. When a color isn't available, they may use one of equal or higher value and keep the design's overall look and feel.

What flowers go well with hydrangeas?

Roses are the classic partner, and eight of the nine designs here use them. Delphinium, lilies, berries and eucalyptus also pair well. If you'd rather roses take the lead, browse our birthday roses.
