Hydrangeas

A hydrangea bouquet suits an anniversary, a birthday, Mother's Day or a quiet sympathy gift. Choose full hydrangea blooms paired with roses, lilies, daisies or blue delphinium, each designed by hand by a local florist near the recipient.

One hydrangea head fills a vase like a handful of smaller flowers. The guide below covers pairings, colors and vases, and who each hydrangea arrangement suits.

What pairs with hydrangeas

Hydrangeas give a design its body, and all 11 arrangements here build on them. Ten add roses for shape and color. Clear Skies Bouquet is the exception, pairing voluminous hydrangea with blue belladonna delphinium for an airy, hopeful look. Gathering Gratitude leans on texture, with kale, dusty miller and garden roses around hydrangea and daisies, and Gems is the busiest mix, adding spray roses, peach hypericum berries, thistle and lisianthus in a glass cylinder vase. Spring Erin Bouquet brings in lilies, gerbera daisies and snapdragons for height.

Choosing a color and a vase

Color sets the mood. Vibrant Violets puts purple hydrangea with hot pink roses in a glass cube, Golden Eye keeps to yellow and green with silver brunia in a white ceramic vase, and Comforting Thoughts Bouquet stays all white with roses, lilies and gerbera daisies for a loss. The container can be part of the gift, too: Alice arrives in a twisted ginger vase, and Purple Rain comes in a large spittoon vase in one generous size. In gardens, bigleaf hydrangeas often turn blue in acidic soil and pink in alkaline soil, and cut stems can shift in shade with the season and what the florist has fresh that day.

Who a hydrangea arrangement suits

Hydrangeas are often linked with gratitude and heartfelt emotion, and they're often listed as the flower for a fourth wedding anniversary; our anniversary flowers include several designs with hydrangea. Alice, with red and white roses and lilies, suits a partner. Berry Rosey, soft pink roses with mophead hydrangea and hypericum berries in a tall glass cylinder, makes an easy thank you or a gift for Mom. For a birthday, see birthday hydrangeas, and for sympathy, white sympathy flowers include calm, all-white choices.

Hydrangea questions

How do you keep hydrangeas alive in a bouquet?

Keep the vase full, since hydrangeas drink heavily and wilt fast when the water drops. Recut the stems every couple of days and keep the arrangement away from heat and direct sun. If a head droops, florists often revive it by submerging the whole bloom in cool water for about an hour, because the petals take in water too.

What do hydrangeas symbolize?

Hydrangeas are often associated with gratitude, understanding and heartfelt emotion. Blue tones are linked with understanding and calm, pink with love and romance, and white with purity and grace. Their full, generous heads also make them a popular sign of abundance and good wishes.

How long does a hydrangea bouquet last?

Usually five days to a week, and longer in a cool room with plenty of fresh water. The large heads are the first to droop if the vase runs dry, so check the level each morning. Damaged or wilted flowers should be reported within 24 hours of delivery for a replacement or refund.

Can I get hydrangea delivery today?

In many areas, yes. A florist order placed by 2:00 PM ET Monday to Friday, or by 1:30 PM ET on Saturday, can go out the same day when the delivery calendar shows that date for the recipient's ZIP code. Sunday delivery isn't offered.
