Singles Day Flowers & Gifts

Singles Day, on November 11, started as a celebration of being single, and flowers are an easy way to treat yourself or a friend flying solo. These 13 bouquets, from fall sunflowers to a classic dozen roses, are each made by hand by a local florist near the recipient.

You can send flowers to your own address, too. The guide covers picking for yourself, choosing for a single friend, and writing a card to you.

Choosing Singles Day gifts

Where Singles Day comes from

The day began among students at Nanjing University in China in the 1990s, picked because 11/11 looks like four ones standing side by side. It later grew into one of the biggest online shopping events in the world, and some people in the United States now mark it as a lighthearted answer to Valentine's Day, a day to celebrate your own life instead of a couple's.

Flowers to treat yourself

Daydream Bouquet is a natural Singles Day pick: roses, carnations and daisies in pink and lavender, set in a ribbed vintage pressed glass vase that suits a dresser or a reading nook. If you've always wanted a dozen red roses, there's no rule that someone else has to send them. Classic Red Roses and Love Love Love both start at twelve stems, Ultimate Red Roses runs from 12 to 100, and our roses page has many more designs.

For a single friend

A friend may prefer cheerful over romantic. Petals Embrace mixes sunflowers, hot pink roses and orange alstroemeria, and Gems brings roses, spray roses, peach hypericum berries, thistle and hydrangea in a glass cylinder vase. November is well into fall, so Expressions of Fall Bouquet, Fall Devotion Bouquet and Garden of Grandeur for Fall bring warm seasonal color; see our fall flowers and gifts for more.

A card to yourself

Writing your own card feels odd for about a second. Keep it short: "To me, for a great year. Keep going." For a friend: "Happy Singles Day. Dinner's on me next week." Add the message at checkout and it's included on a card with the flowers.

Singles Day questions

Why is November 11 called Singles Day?

The date 11/11 is made of four ones, which students in China read as four single people standing together. The idea took hold on campus in the 1990s and spread from there into a national event and, later, a huge shopping day.

Is Singles Day celebrated in the United States?

Not as an official holiday, but more people now use it as a fun excuse to treat themselves or a single friend. Fresh flowers, a nice dinner or a quiet night in all fit the spirit. For more no-reason bouquets, see our just because flowers.

What is a good Singles Day gift for a friend?

Flowers in their favorite color work for anyone, with a note that celebrates them rather than their relationship status. Sunflowers and bold mixes suit a guy or anyone who likes strong color, and pink roses suit a friend who loves the classics. You can add a balloon to most flower orders in the cart.

Can I send flowers to myself?

Yes. Enter your own name and address at checkout like any recipient, pick a delivery date, and a local florist will bring the flowers to you. It's a fun way to mark Singles Day, a promotion or a hard week now behind you.
