Choosing Kwanzaa gifts and flowers

Red, black and green

The Kwanzaa colors are red, black and green, seen in the bendera, the Kwanzaa flag, and in the candles of the kinara. Seven of the nine designs here feature red, often red roses, and greenery runs through them, from the low tray of Garland Greens Centerpiece to the cascading eucalyptus in Yuletide Greetings. Black is rare in fresh flowers, so a black ribbon, vase or table runner at home can complete the palette. For more red designs, see our red flowers.

For the karamu and the week

The karamu feast is traditionally held on December 31, and a centerpiece is a generous gift for whoever is hosting. Garden of Grandeur for Holiday is wide enough for a buffet, and Rosey Shine Centerpiece, with hydrangeas, red roses and real candles, suits a dinner table. Zawadi, the gifts traditionally given on the last day, are often handmade or meant to teach, while flowers make a fitting thank-you to the hosts you visit during the week.

Putting a principle in the card

Kwanzaa centers on the Nguzo Saba, seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. A card can name one, such as "Wishing your family umoja and joy this Kwanzaa."

Kwanzaa flower questions

When is Kwanzaa?

Kwanzaa runs from December 26 to January 1 every year. Each of the seven days focuses on one principle, and a candle is lit on the kinara each evening. Flowers that arrive near December 26 can grace the whole week, and our New Year flowers suit the final day.

What are the Kwanzaa candles called?

The seven candles are the mishumaa saba, held in a candle holder called the kinara: three red, three green and one black in the center. Red is often linked with struggle, green with hope and the future, and black with the people.

What are good Kwanzaa gifts?

Traditional zawadi lean toward books, handmade crafts and heritage items, especially for children. For adults and hosts, fresh flowers in red and green, a candlelit centerpiece or fruit for the table are welcome choices. Browse more holiday centerpieces for the karamu table.
