Flower Centerpieces

Floral centerpieces bring color to the middle of a holiday dinner, a family gathering or a host's table. Choose low arrangements, candlelit designs, baskets and trays in fall, Christmas, Easter and Hanukkah colors, each built by hand by a local florist near the recipient.

The right table centerpiece depends on your table and the season, so the guide below covers height, shape, candles and timing. For a dinner, many hosts schedule delivery for the day before.

How to choose floral centerpieces

Centerpiece flowers by season

Most of these flower centerpieces follow the calendar. About 20 designs lean into fall and harvest color, like the Happy Harvest Cornucopia, where sunflowers, mums and carnations spill from a horn-shaped container, and you'll find more in our fall centerpieces. Close to 20 are Christmas pieces, from the red-rose Very Merry Centerpiece in a low tray to the cone-shaped Crimson Christmas Tree; browse them together in Christmas centerpieces. For spring, the Easter Egg Basket tucks colorful eggs between roses, daisies and carnations in a handled basket (see Easter centerpieces), and Hanukkah Hues runs blue delphinium through white roses and white lilies.

Height, shape and where it sits

Table centerpieces for a sit-down meal should sit low enough that guests can talk across them. By the Candlelight Centerpiece, for example, is about 8 inches high and 20 inches across. For a long table, the Designer's Choice Christmas Centerpiece is built to run down the middle between place settings. Check which way a design faces, too: Harvest Blossom Bouquet is arranged all the way around in a glass cube, so it works in the center of the table, while Sunset Harvest Bouquet is made to be seen from the front and suits a sideboard or console. Trays and baskets, like Garland Greens Centerpiece and Harvest Sunflower Basket, need no vase at all. Most designs here come in three or more sizes.

Centerpieces with candles

Nine of the centerpieces include candles, which suit an evening meal. Traditional Christmas Centerpiece sets red wax tapers among roses, carnations and Asiatic lilies, Christmas Cheer Centerpiece has three tall tapers, and Brilliant Autumn Centerpiece gathers bronze and red mums around a single gold taper. Light the candles only while people are at the table, keep the flame clear of greenery as the wax burns down, and never leave them burning in an empty room. If you'd like a scented candle to go with the flowers, see our candles.

Floral centerpiece questions

What should I put in the middle of my dining table?

A low floral centerpiece is the classic choice, since it adds color without blocking anyone's view. Many hosts keep it under about 12 inches so guests can see each other, leave room for serving dishes, and pick a color palette that suits the season or the tablecloth. For a long table, two matching smaller pieces can replace one large one.

When should a Thanksgiving or Christmas centerpiece be delivered?

The day before the meal is safest, because deliveries can't be set for a specific hour. Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November. Christmas is December 25, and when it lands on a Sunday, choose Saturday or earlier. Peak holidays can bring delays, so order early. See Thanksgiving centerpieces.

How do I keep a floral centerpiece fresh?

Check the water every day, since low containers hold less than a tall vase and centerpiece flowers drink quickly. Recut stems at an angle if you can reach them, pull out any blooms that fade, and keep the arrangement away from heat vents, direct sun and bowls of ripening fruit.

Can I send a centerpiece to the person hosting?

Yes, and it's a kind way to thank a host before you arrive. Send it to their home a day ahead so they can plan the table around it, and add a card message at checkout, such as "Can't wait to celebrate with you. Love, the Garcias."

Will my centerpiece look exactly like the photo?

Close, but not identical. Each one is made by hand, and if a flower, color or container isn't available, the florist may substitute one of equal or higher value while keeping the look and feel. Designer's Choice centerpieces are built from the freshest flowers on hand, so expect the style and colors rather than an exact match.
