Choosing summer flower arrangements

Start with a palette

Most summer bouquets fall into two camps. Bright and warm: Sweetest Sunset pairs sunflowers and red roses with solidago, Petals Embrace mixes sunflowers, hot pink roses and orange alstroemeria, and Sunbeam Bouquet sets yellow lilies and peach roses in a tall, gold-rimmed vase. Soft and cool: Summer Dunes brings peach roses, dahlias and delphinium in green, light blue and white, and Blushing Lavender Bouquet keeps to light pink roses, lavender carnations and purple stock. If big yellow faces are their favorite, our sunflower bouquets go further.

Summer blooms that handle the heat

Some flowers shrug off a warm room better than others. Sunflowers, carnations, alstroemeria and lilies are known for long vase life, and lilies keep opening for days, so Blushing Beauty Bouquet keeps changing through the week. Hydrangea is lovely but thirsty. It shows up in Summer Breeze, Gems and Blushing Beauty, and does best with deep, cool water; see our hydrangea arrangements if it's their flower.

Occasions from June to August

Graduation season runs mostly through May and June, and a bright summer bouquet suits a grad party; our graduation flowers have more ideas. Summer Breeze, with roses, hydrangea and button blooms, is built fresh from July through August, and the golden yellow and deep blue of Fields of Europe Summer also fit a Fourth of July table. For a host or a birthday, size by the room: smaller for a counter, larger as the focal point of a dining table.

Keep a summer bouquet fresh

Heat is the main enemy of cut flowers. Set the vase out of direct sun and away from a hot window, change the water every day or two, and recut the stems at an angle. If the recipient will be out on a hot afternoon, choose an address where someone can get the flowers into water soon after they arrive.

Summer flower questions

What flowers are in a summer bouquet?

Sunflowers, roses, lilies, hydrangea, dahlias, gerbera daisies and snapdragons are summer regulars. Here, roses appear in 11 of the 15 designs, often beside carnations, lilies or daisies. Summer Spritz Bouquet keeps things simple with pastel pink snapdragons and bright orange gerbera daisies.

What is the flower for June and July?

The rose and honeysuckle are the traditional June birth flowers, and larkspur and water lily belong to July. Delphinium, a close cousin of larkspur, appears in Summer Dunes, and Ultimate Pink Roses or Ultimate Red Roses, from one to three dozen or more, suit a June birthday.

What colors feel most like summer?

Bright yellow, orange and hot pink read the most like summer. Yellow flowers are often linked with joy and friendship and orange with energy and enthusiasm. If they prefer calm, softer summer looks lean on blush, lavender and pale blue, like Blushing Lavender Bouquet.

How does summer flower delivery work?

A local florist near the recipient arranges the bouquet and delivers it, usually by 8:00 PM in their time zone, though a specific hour can't be promised. Delivery starts at $13.99, and the full charge shows at checkout. Our shipping policy has the details.

Can I send summer flowers for Father's Day?

Yes. Father's Day is the third Sunday in June, so choose Saturday or an earlier date. Sweetest Sunset's sunflowers and red roses suit many dads, and our Father's Day flowers and gifts add dish gardens and a blooming plant.
