Sympathy Flowers

Send sympathy flowers to a grieving family's home or the funeral service. Choose vase arrangements for the home or standing sprays, wreaths and floor baskets for the service, each made by hand by a local florist near the recipient.

Flowers tell a family you're thinking of them, but knowing what to send isn't always easy. What's right depends on where the flowers are going and how well you knew the family, so the guide below covers etiquette, colors and timing.

How to choose sympathy flowers

Who usually sends what

Immediate family usually chooses the casket spray. Extended family and close friends often send funeral sprays, wreaths or baskets for the service, where they're displayed near the casket or urn. Our standing sprays and floor baskets are made for this. Friends, neighbors and coworkers tend to send a vase arrangement or a sympathy plant to the family's home. A plant lasts long after the service, offering comfort and a quiet reminder of your support. A team or office can pool together for one larger arrangement and sign every name on the card.

Flowers, colors and a personal touch

White is the most traditional color, and roses, lilies, carnations and chrysanthemums appear in many of our sympathy flower arrangements. Calm tones suit most services: blue and white feels peaceful, lavender and pink feel gentle, and yellow brings warmth and light. A bright arrangement can celebrate a life well lived. If you know the deceased's favorite flower or color, choosing it is a personal way to honor them. Shop white sympathy flowers or use the color row at the top of this page.

Check the family's wishes first

Before you send sympathy flowers, read the obituary or ask the funeral home. A quick call confirms the service time and address and whether the family is accepting flowers. Some families ask for donations in lieu of flowers, and customs vary by faith: flowers are not traditional at Jewish funerals or during shiva, the seven-day mourning period that follows, when food or a donation is more common. For a cremation or memorial service, an urn arrangement is designed to surround the urn or sit beside it. If you'd like to send something other than flowers, sympathy gifts such as fruit and gourmet baskets are delivered by a local florist to the family's home.

How sympathy flower delivery works

Each arrangement is made by hand and delivered by a local florist near the recipient. Enter the ZIP code on the product page to see available dates. For a funeral home, use its full address and include the name of the deceased and the service details so the flowers reach the right room. Same-day delivery is available on orders placed by 2:00 PM ET Monday to Friday and by 1:30 PM ET on Saturday. There are no Sunday deliveries. If the flowers arrive damaged or wilted, tell us within 24 hours of delivery; for any other concern with freshness or presentation, you have five days. We'll replace the order or refund it, as our refund policy explains.

Sympathy flower questions

What is the difference between sympathy flowers and funeral flowers?

Funeral flowers are sent to the service itself: standing sprays, wreaths, hearts, crosses and floor baskets displayed near the casket or urn, which families sometimes bring to the cemetery afterward. Sympathy flowers usually go to the family's home or office, where a vase arrangement or plant is easier to keep. This collection includes both, and you can also shop funeral and service flowers or sympathy flowers for the home on their own.

When should sympathy flowers arrive?

Aim for funeral flowers to arrive before the visitation or service begins. Flowers for the home have no deadline. Grief doesn't end with the service, so many people send flowers in the first days after a loss and again a few weeks later, once relatives and loved ones have gone home. A later delivery is a kind reminder that you're still thinking of the family.

Can sympathy flowers be delivered today?

Yes, on florist arrangements ordered by 2:00 PM ET Monday to Friday or by 1:30 PM ET on Saturday, when today's date is available for the recipient's ZIP code. There are no Sunday deliveries, and gift baskets that ship by carrier are never same-day.

What should I write on a sympathy card?

You don't need the right words. A short, heartfelt message is the best way to express condolences, such as "With deepest sympathy, we are thinking of you" or "Holding you close during this difficult time." If you knew the person, share a brief memory, and sign your full name so the family knows who sent the flowers. More card message ideas appear on this page.

Can I send sympathy flowers to someone's office?

Yes. Use the business address and the recipient's full name. Office deliveries go to the front desk or reception during business hours, so one of our smaller sympathy arrangements that fits on a desk is a good choice.

Will the arrangement look exactly like the photo?

Each arrangement is made by hand by a local florist, so it may vary slightly from the photo. If a flower, color or container isn't available, the florist may substitute one of equal or higher value while keeping the look and feel of the design.

What to write on the card

Short and sincere is best. Tap a message to copy it, then paste it in the card message box at checkout.
